History of False Flag Operations

In 1953, the CIA wanted to oust the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran, Mohammed Mossadegh.

To convince Iranians to accept this change in government, the CIA staged false-flag operations; meaning, buildings were bombed, but an innocent party was blamed.

"Iranians working for the C.I.A. and posing as Communists harassed religious leaders and staged the bombing of one cleric's home in a campaign to turn the country's Islamic religious community against Mossadegh's government."

The most symbolically powerful aspect of Albright's speech, however, concerns the history of American-Iranian relations. The 1953 coup, which restored power to Mohammed Reza Shah Pahlavi, is regarded by many Iranians as a symbol of American perfidy; Albright will acknowledge that the United States played a "significant role" in the coup and that the Shah went on to "brutally repress" political dissent.
