The 1956-1990 Operation Gladio
clandestine "stay-behind" NATO operations created terrorism
In Italy, Spain, Denmark, Poland, Finland, and other European nations,
by the CIA, but to be blamed on alleged "Communists"
NATO's "stay-behind" units — secret military groups in various European nations —suppressed left-wing movements through acts of terrorism. The 1969 Piazza Fontana bombing and the 1980 Bologna train station bombing were blamed on leftist extremists but later far-right operatives linked to NATO's stay-behind units were found to be behind these acts of terrorism. These operations were part of a broader strategy to create instability and justify government crackdowns—a tactic known as the "strategy of tension". These operations were also connected to international narcotics networks.
